How to Format ChatGPT and Claude Replies for WhatsApp

Paste a ChatGPT or Claude answer straight into WhatsApp and you'll usually see a mess of stray asterisks, underscores and brackets instead of the bold text, lists and links the AI intended. Here's exactly why that happens, and what WhatsApp can actually do.

Why AI replies look broken in WhatsApp

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and most other AI assistants write their answers in Markdown — the same lightweight formatting language used on GitHub, Reddit and countless developer tools. Markdown uses **text** for bold, # for headings, | for tables, and [text](url) for links. It's a convention, not a universal standard, and WhatsApp's message composer never learned most of it.

WhatsApp only recognizes a handful of its own formatting symbols, and they're not the same ones Markdown uses. So when you paste unmodified AI output into a chat, WhatsApp doesn't render the formatting — it just displays the raw symbols as plain text, cluttering the message.

WhatsApp's actual formatting syntax

StyleWhat AI writesWhat WhatsApp actually renders
Bold**text** or __text__*text* — a single asterisk on each side
Italic*text* or _text__text_ — underscore only
Strikethrough~~text~~~text~ — a single tilde
Monospace`text` or fenced code blocksTriple backticks only — no language tag, no single-backtick inline code
Headings# HeadingNot supported — WhatsApp has no heading levels
TablesPipe-separated rowsNot supported — no table rendering at all
Links[text](url)Not supported — shows as literal text with brackets

What happens if you paste AI text as-is

Double asterisks stay double instead of collapsing to WhatsApp's single-asterisk bold, so bold text often renders as literal **stars** around the word instead of making it bold. Headings keep their # characters. Tables collapse into a single unreadable line of pipe characters. Markdown links show up as [link text](https://example.com) in full, forcing the reader to parse a raw URL by hand.

The fix

Converting by hand every time gets old fast, especially for longer answers with tables or multiple headings. Chatfertig does the conversion automatically: paste the AI's Markdown, and it rewrites bold, italic and strikethrough into WhatsApp's real syntax, turns headings into bold text, flattens tables into readable label-value lists, and spells out links as link text: https://example.com so nothing gets lost. The preview shows exactly what will appear in WhatsApp before you copy it.
